She has been hand-made by women, The women who live by the ocean, The women whose lives changed forever after the tsunami, The women who are exploring a new way of living, The women who are empowering themselves. Tsunamika is a project initiated in the coastal villages of Tamil Nadu as a response to the devastation caused by the tsunami of 2004 in India. Citizens of Auroville, an international township based on the teachings of the Mother and Sri Aurobindo, moved into action to give aid to local people. Tsunamika project emerged to help traumatized fisher women by offering them the opportunity to overcome their grief through creative handicraft work. Tsunamika, thus, became an inspiration in the face of disaster. She assumed a life of her own, and seven years later, with over five million hand-made dolls, today her message of love in the face of disaster is still vibrant. Tsunamika was launched as an experiment in gift economy. She was never sold but was shared unconditionally with whoever came in contact with her. This brought a powerful potency to her message of hope and love! |
